If you’re looking for a powerful throat hit, you’re reading the wrong review. EverSmoke provides a very mild inhale, which as we mentioned, was very smooth. We expected that would mean thin vapor clouds on the exhale, but we were wrong; the clouds were nearly as big as those produced by stronger products. We weren’t blown away by any of the flavors we tried, but they were all relatively tasty, and good for the price.

Our review was based on the EverSmoke premium starter kit, which includes two batteries (one short, one long), five cartridges and a USB charger/AC adapter combination. When you order, you can choose either manual (the push-to-activate type) or automatic batteries. Other starter kits come in at a lower price for just one battery, or higher prices with extra batteries, a car charger and additional cartridges included. You can purchase mini-batteries (convenient for traveling) and a charging case as options. Batteries held their charge quite well; cartridges lasted right around an average amount of time (equal to about a pack of cigarettes).

Ten different flavors are available to go with the EverSmoke e-cigarette, including three tobaccos, menthol and peppermint, and an assortment of fruit, novelty and savory flavors including coffee, cherry and pina colada. Strengths run from no nicotine up to full flavor (18mg). One interesting difference is that carts come in a package of 15 that looks like a regular cigarette pack, instead of the normal 5-packs sold by other companies. It’s handier for carrying around.

EverSmoke is a sister company to South Beach Smoke, so the electronics are similar – and good. We think that most people in the market for a lower-priced vape would be more than satisfied.

Everything necessary to get started quickly is included in the SmokeTip starter kit: two batteries (the short size), a USB charger and a wall adapter, and five cartridges. No bells and whistles, of course, but that’s not what this company is all about. The flavor was good, the vapor clouds on the exhale were good, and the throat hit was noticeable but not overpowering. Technically, the product performed well, and both the cartridges and battery charge lasted a little longer than average. If you want to “step up from a Civic to an Accord,” you can buy longer batteries, as well as car chargers, portable charging kits and an e-cig which attaches directly to your computer for vaping at your desk.

What SmokeTip lacks in pizazz, it makes up for in flavor cartridges (unlike other “budget” brands). There are 21 to choose from, of course including several tobacco and menthol flavors, but with lots of savory and fruit flavored e-liquids as well (coffee and clove, pineapple and cherry, just to name a few); strengths run from no nicotine to full flavor (16mg). Other options include four colors of short batteries, or the longer white ones. The company offers free shipping with all orders, and a free battery with orders of 60 cartridges or more.

Is SmokeTip the best electronic cigarette on the market? Not quite. Is it a great deal for the budget-conscious who still want quality in an e-cig? Absolutely.

The CDC calls the e-cigarette findings alarming since the long-term effects of vaping remain largely unknown, and the findings have given new ammunition to those calling for stringent new regulations on electronic cigarettes.

OUR OPINION: One would have thought that the anti-smoking movement would have pulled out champagne and cigars (bubble gum ones, of course) to celebrate the success of their campaign to reduce teen smoking rates. Those of us who remember when nearly 50% of high school seniors were regular cigarette smokers see the fact that fewer than 10% of high school students smoke as a quantum shift in teen behaviors, for which anti-smoking activists should take credit.

However…those who are overly alarmed that some teens are trying (or using) electronic cigarettes should spend a little time reviewing the literature on teens and risky behavior. A certain percentage of teenagers are going to experiment with whatever substances or devices are available – and 13% is a number which represents experimentation, not a pervasive trend.

Of course, there should be age restrictions on availability of e-cigs. However, there are certainly age restrictions on alcohol purchase, and the CDC reports that 35% of US high school students drink (and 21% binge drink). 27 percent of high schoolers have used illegal drugs over the past year – and, need we say, they are completely illegal. “Huffing” inhalants and solvents is almost as common among younger teens as e-cig use is among older ones, yet the last time we checked it’s still legal to purchase paint thinner and glue.

Less panic and more common sense might seem to be in order. But then again, that’s not the approach that the anti-vapers (or anti-smokers, for that matter) seem to take very often.

First, the obvious. Researchers found that would-be quitters were much more successful when they used e-cigarettes daily, instead of just occasionally. 14 percent of those who vaped every day were able to reduce their tobacco smoking by at least half, while only six percent of the test subjects who vaped just occasionally were able to drastically lower their tobacco consumption.

OUR OPINION: We don’t know if the same researchers have concluded that running every day will keep you in better shape than running every once in a while, but we wouldn’t be surprised.

Here’s the more interesting finding: smokers who switched to tank-style vaporizers were much more likely to quit cigarettes than those using simpler cartridge-type e-cigs. Nearly one-third of those vaping with a tank model were able to quit tobacco, while only 13 percent of the “cigalike” (traditional ecig) users had given up smoking. Researchers were unable to determine the exact reasons why there’s such a big difference, but they theorize that tanks are able to deliver nicotine to the user more efficiently and provide greater satisfaction for the users.

OUR OPINION: The latter theory would certainly make sense to most dedicated vapers.

The research was conducted at King’s College London. Approximately 1,500 smokers participated in the studies.

Vapor Couture is produced by the same company behind V2 Cigs, and the quality of this product is the same as that of their flagship brand. It’s unquestionably a feminine e-cigarette. The cartridges and batteries are the same thickness as you’d find with a traditional slim cigarette. And there’s no “standard” white or black battery for sale; all of the batteries and carts are in fashion colors and designs, while the LED tip is made of faceted crystal glowing in a selection of colors. The taste is smooth with a mild throat hit, and there was a nice vapor cloud on the exhale. Battery charge and cartridges each lasted a bit longer than average.

There are six flavors available for Vapor Couture: two tobacco choices (one hearty and one rich), two mint flavors (one a mix of mint and menthol), strawberry champagne and passion fruit. They’re all sold in cartridge strengths from no nicotine to full strength, with the same freshness dating as their big brother, V2. Batteries come in four different colors or patterns: brushed platinum, white with an understated VC logo, deep purple and rose gold. The cartridges are also available in the same four colors/patterns, so you can mix or match as you like.

We were able to test the L’Essentiel +1 Kit, which was equipped with two batteries, ten flavor cartridges, a USB charger and wall adapter, and a stainless steel charm necklace that can hold the e-cig (it can also be modified to be used as a bracelet). The kit retails for $99.95. Everything in the kit said “feminine” – the designers clearly know how to appeal to a female vaper interested in style. A more expensive kit is available with a car charger and portable charging case; less expensive kits come with fewer accessories and components. Other upscale accessories such as cases and purses, as well as the necklace in sterling silver, are also available for purchase.

It’s important to note that even though they’re made by the same company, the Vapor Couture line is not compatible with V2 Cigs. You can’t use V2 cartridges on a VC e-cigarette, for example. Then again, if you are looking for a feminine and stylish electronic cigarette, you probably aren’t trying to mix different products. For that vaper, Vapor Couture is an excellent choice that stands completely on its own.

Pleasant taste is the attribute that stands out most when we think about South Beach. In particular, we enjoyed the tobacco, menthol and peach flavors – but all of their selections are tasty and well calculated. There was a moderate throat hit – not too weak, not too strong – and a definite smoothness to the vapor. This was a well-built e-cig; the only complaint we had (other than the fact that we personally prefer stronger throat hits) was that batteries needed to be replaced a bit more often than our top-rated brand. On the other hand, the batteries charged a good deal quicker than most of the competition. Battery charge and cartridge life was right around average.

There are ten flavors of South Beach Smoke cartridges available: three tobacco flavors, menthol, vanilla, chocolate, peppermint, pina colada, peach and cherry. As with most top-line companies, the carts are sold in the full range of nicotine levels from extra strong to no nicotine. One distinction that may be important to note is that all of the e-liquid in their cartridges is made in America; most of the e-liquid sold worldwide is manufactured in China. Battery selection isn’t as great as flavor choices, with just white and black batteries available in two lengths, short and 100mm. Manual (with a push button to control the inhale) and automatic batteries are both available.

Our testers had the Deluxe Ultimate starter kit to play with. It’s extremely well-equipped, with three batteries, 20 cartridges, USB and AC chargers (and it’s unusual to see a full wall charger in a starter kit, instead of an adapter for the USB charger), a car adapter, a portable charging case, a carrying case, a lanyard, and a power e-cig that attaches directly to a USB port without needing to be recharged. This kit retails for $159.95. There are a number of South Beach starter kits that come with a lot fewer accessories and a much lower price tag, like the Deluxe starter kit for $59.95.

South Beach didn’t quite make it to the top of our list of electronic cigarette brands, but it came close by virtue of its taste. It’s in our regular ecig rotation.

Several factors went into our ranking of V2. Their flavors taste great, the vapor they produce looks good, they provide the greatest number of options, and we’re impressed with their quality and commitment to developing an even better product.  They don’t have an overly-powerful throat hit, but it’s noticeable and satisfying.

We’ll start with the flavors, which come in a good variety and were all tasty. There are three different tobacco-flavored blends and three menthol/mint choices; vanilla and chocolate, coffee and cola, cherry and grape are also available, as are a number of other flavors from the company’s sister line, Zig-Zag. V2 Red (similar to a Marlboro) and coffee are our favorites. There’s a full range of nicotine choices for each flavor, from extra strong to no nicotine. All cartridges come with freshness dating, a rarity in the e-cig market. The vapor was good on the inhale but without the same power of a tobacco cigarette; it was thick when exhaled, however, allowing us to blow great rings – our biggest test for vapor clouds. Cartridge life was about equal to a pack of traditional cigarettes, right around the average for the brands we’ve tested.

V2 batteries come in white, chrome, blue and black and in the normal short and long options. They also have a unique extra-long battery which is a full 140mm long when a cartridge is attached. It not only looks elegant in a woman’s hand, but carries a significantly longer charge than more traditional-sized batteries. Automatic and manual (push-button activated) options are available, and it’s worth noting that the automatic batteries don’t have the five-second shutoff feature that most brands do. Battery life was a bit higher than average, and well above average for the extra-long battery.

Earlier, we mentioned product development. And V2 Cigs is extremely active on that front. They still offer their standard product line but also offer a premium product, the EX series. The batteries (long sized only) utilize new technology to give the user many more puffs than the classic models and come in different colors and patterns. And there’s a cartridge sleeve at the base that allows you to use either classic cartridges or EX series cartridges. They’re also one of the first e-cigarette companies to add lines of tank e-cigs, reviewed elsewhere on this site.

We sampled the V2 Ultimate Kit. It came with three batteries, one of each size; 25 cartridges; a USB charger with wall and car adapters, a portable charging case and regular carrying case, a “power Cig” that plugs directly into a USB port to let you vape without recharging, and a lanyard. Retail price is $149.95. Four other kits are also available, ranging all the way down to the very affordable Beginner’s Kit with one battery, five cartridges, a USB charger and a disposable e-cig, for $34.95. We’ve also tested the new EX batteries, which indeed do last a lot longer than the classic models.

V2 is also one of the only major manufacturers that caters to those who like to buy their own e-liquid and refill cartridges on their own, either for the fun of it or to save money. There are selections of blank cartridges and different flavors of e-liquid, as well as rubber or aluminum drip tips to make the refilling process easy.

The Series 7 is definitely still portable, but it’s much heavier and thicker than a pen device; in fact, it’s even a bit wider than a traditional eGo, the long-time leader in this class. For want of a better term, we felt this vaporizer looked much “sleeker” than most large tank systems because its unique construction allowed the designers to make it look like a one-piece unit. There’s only a silver band separating the mouthpiece from the rest of the device (along, of course, with the activation button and LED indicators). The Series 7 is available in black, blue or steel, with black mouthpieces. You’re unfortunately really not able to see the amount of e-liquid (or other medium) left in the tank from the outside, but the large-capacity tanks made that less of an issue for us.

Before we get to the specifics of this unit and its performance, here’s what stood out to us on the Series 7 vaporizer. Like its older brother Series 3, it has three different tanks available for either e-juice, loose leaf or wax. However, the advanced technology in this unit not only detects the medium and is able to automatically select the proper settings (as in the Series 3), but also has manual controls so you can choose between three different voltage settings for liquid or wax (3.7V/4.2V/4.7V) and three different temperatures for loose leaf (390F/415F/440F).  The settings are controlled by a different number of taps on the activation button instead of a separate knob, which we found a bit difficult to get used to but quickly decided that it was an advantage because the button settings are almost impossible to change accidentally. The other plus we found was the construction, which is (similar to the Series 3) based primarily on magnets rather than components which are threaded, making it a snap (literally) to open, close and charge the vaporizer. (The cap on the cartridge does still have to be screwed on-and-off to fill the tank, however.) What surprised us was that this system can do so much more than the Series 3 while still having the “hidden” tank/atomizer and magnetic ports, and do it without any extra controls needed.

Here are the details you’ve been waiting for. The unit comes standard with a e-liquid tank which holds 2.5 ml and a loose leaf tank that you can pack 1300mg into, good sizes for an eGo-type device. A wax cartridge is due out later this year and will cost $29.99 extra. The tanks all fit right into the battery unit and are held magnetically. As for the battery, it’s a strong 1800 mAh with the variable settings mentioned earlier. The kit also includes a USB charger with an AC adapter and a cleaning kit. A car adapter is optional; there are no other battery options. The kit carries a hefty price tag of $149.99 which we thought might be a bit high, but you do get a lot of oomph for the money.

OK, now for performance. Quite simply, it was terrific for a personal vaporizer that doesn’t rely on more intricate sub-ohm vaping. There was very good vapor with a decent throat hit at the lowest battery setting, and huge amounts of vapor with the strong hit that we prefer at 4.7V; we also thought the taste was cleaner than with the Series 3. Battery charges lasted an average around two days while vaping at a variety of settings, and the 2.5 ml tank easily kept us going throughout the whole day without a refill. When it came to loose leaf, the device did exactly as promised, heating quickly and delivering a very good experience (we used the medium temperature setting) with a large enough cartridge capacity to keep the vape going for a while. We look forward to testing the wax cartridge when it’s out.

We’ve described V2’s e-liquid choices in more detail in our Series 3 review; the brief summary is that they have a good number of standard flavors and strengths but not the enormous range of delicious choices you can find from companies VaporFi or Halo. Naturally, you can use any juice from any company with the Series 7, so it really shouldn’t be a major consideration.

Quite simply, the V2 Pro Series 7 is a huge step forward from their earlier Series 3 and we like it better than more traditional units like the eGo. It’s a strong choice for heavy vapers or those who more control over the experience than is possible with most vape pens, and a clear winner if you plan on vaping several different mediums.

The VaporFi Pro has a fairly sleek look to it; it’s all matte black from the battery to the tank to the mouthpiece (which is glossy black). However, if you choose the “Pro Starter Kit (in Colors)” for around the same price, you can customize your kit so that the tank and battery are in one of nine other colors, including stainless steel. The included tank only has a small window to see how much e-liquid is left; while that might be a stylistic advantage, we find it inconvenient. You can purchase a clear tank as an accessory instead, or upgrade for another $10 to the Pro Platinum kit which includes a glass clearomizer.

We enjoyed the VaporFi Pro experience quite a bit. As mentioned above, the kit is “entry-level” meaning there are no variable controls on the unit; you just press the manual button and inhale, so it’s very easy to use. We got a good amount of vapor on the inhale – not quite as much as vapor or throat hit as we’d personally like, but still with a substantial feel to the vapor and thick clouds on the exhale. That’s easy enough to change though, since VaporFi sells a variable-voltage battery (1000 mAh, 3.2-4.8v) as an option. (They also sell 2.5 ohm atomizers to go with the variable battery.)

OK, we’ve talked about a few options, but what’s in the VaporFi Pro kit? It comes standard with one 1.5 ml tank, a 650 mAh battery, three additional 2.2 ohm atomizers, a USB charger and an AC adapter. If you get the Color Pro Starter Kit, you can upgrade to a 3 mL tank for an extra $3 and to a 1000 mAh battery for another $3, only sacrificing the extra atomizers in return. It’s a good deal for heavier vapers who don’t mind the extra heft and length, even though the standard tank and 650 mAh battery did us just fine for a day of fairly regular vaping. The construction quality was top notch; VaporFi is a sister company to South Beach Smoke which has a good history of producing quality products, so we weren’t surprised.

We don’t want to say we’ve left the best for last, since the unit is pretty damn good on its own. But visiting the VaporFi e-liquid online store is like being a kid in a candy store. Yes, their liquid is excellent-tasting and made in the USA, but what really makes your eye pop is the selection of dozens and dozens of flavors, which can also be combined and custom-blended in their “vapetender” for nearly 60,000 different possible combinations. It can be fun to “mix your own” eliquid flavors at home, but it’s even more fun (and a lot less messy) to do it online and have a 30 ml bottle (or more) show up at your door. You can also between 70/30 or 50/50 PG/VG bases and strengths all the way up to 36mg. It can be hard to stop playing and actually make a purchase, but when you do, the end result is delicious.

The VaporFi Pro is definitely the second-best vape pen we’ve reviewed, particularly when you go with the “Color Kit” and take advantage of the inexpensive tank and battery upgrade. We use it all the time, and think it’s a terrific product.

The first thing you notice about the Triton, naturally, is the way it looks. And it looks great. It’s sleek and stylish, unlike some of the “clunkier-looking” pen-style vaporizers on the market. There are eleven battery colors to choose from; we liked the look of the traditional black, but titanium or deep purple may be more your style. The attached tank is clear, which to us is a major advantage over tanks which only let you see the e-liquid level by squinting at a tiny window. The mouthpiece is a bit smaller in diameter than some of the competition, but we liked it; we felt it enabled us to get a better seal when inhaling.

What really makes the Triton stand out, though, is the vaping experience: it’s completely satisfying for most users, yet simple for novices to use right out of the box. That’s because the system doesn’t have – or need – complicated controls to deliver terrific vapor. The system is calibrated to deliver large quantities of satisfying vapor without playing around with voltage adjustments; the only control on the standard Triton is the manual push button to activate the battery when you inhale. The throat hit is strong, but not overpowering.  (If you are an experienced vaper and want more control with an ever stronger hit, though, don’t despair. An optional variable voltage battery lets you select between a range of 3.3 to 4.8 volts with a simple twist of the dial at the end of the battery. Very well designed.)

The Triton starter kit comes standard with two batteries, and you can choose from either the less powerful 400 mAh or the more powerful 650 mAh. We found the 400 mAh battery more than sufficient for a day of moderate vaping, although heavier vapers will prefer the longer-lasting charge of the 650 mAh. (You can also order very reasonably-priced 900 or 1300 mAh batteries as separate accessories if you prefer.) Two clear 2.4 ml tanks (much better than the smaller tanks standard with some systems) also come with the starter kit; the Triton’s mouthpiece easily screws off to allow quick refilling of the tank without having to unscrew the entire atomizer assembly. A USB charger, a wall adapter, a cone to cover the mouthpiece if you’d like, and a solid carrying case complete the kit. The entire system is rock solid in terms of construction, battery life is terrific, and we haven’t had to change coils since we’ve had the kit (and it’s been a while). We like the fact that with the Triton you are able to change the coil without needing to replace the entire tank assembly.

The final major plus to the Halo Triton is Halo e-liquid.  American-made and rigidly quality-controlled, it’s some of the most delicious liquid we’ve tasted (and has won a number of awards from industry publications). The selection is large (including 14 tobacco blends, five menthol blends, and a number of “gourmet” flavors) and comes in nicotine levels from zero to 24mg. You can, of course, can use any manufacturer’s juice in the tank – but we haven’t had a desire to do that.

Options include the larger batteries as mentioned, as well as colored translucent tanks and cones – and our favorite, the Triton to EGO/510 adapter, which allows you to either use other EGO tanks with your Triton battery or vice versa. It’s a must-have if you’re a dedicated vaper with a number of different systems in your collection.

Solid, beautiful, easy-to-use, terrific vapor and delicious taste; there’s not much more that anyone would want in a tank system. It’s why the Halo Triton is tiedas our top-ranked pen-style vaporizer.
